Modular Parts

Each rack is made up of interchangeable parts: uprights, arms, bases and braces. Order exactly what you need for your layout.

02

Optional Wheels

For double-sided racks: 200 mm diameter wheels in two types, Free (move in any direction, with brake) or Fixed (single direction). Sold as an accessory.

03

Purpose-Made Feet

If you skip the wheels, the base needs to sit slightly off the ground to clear bolt heads. Our purpose-made feet handle this cleanly (or use blocks of wood).

Configurations: Single Side

These are just some of the possible arrangements. More or less arms can be used, and the height/position is freely adjustable. 4 upright heights available: 2 m · 2.5 m · 3 m · 3.5 m. 3 cross-stay lengths: 2.8 m · 4.2 m · 5.6 m.

Rack Parts

Each rack is made up of the following parts. Mix and match to spec exactly the rack you need, and use the planning chart below to count how many of each you'll need.

01

Bases

2 types: one each for single-sided and double-sided racks.

  • Mbr-base-s, single
  • Mbr-base-d, double
02

Uprights

One design, 4 height choices. All uprights have a series of holes (vertically, every 50 mm) so arms can be bolted at the height that suits you best.

  • Mbr-up 200, 2 m
  • Mbr-up 250, 2.5 m
  • Mbr-up 300, 3 m
  • Mbr-up 350, 3.5 m
03

Cross Stays

One design, 3 length (span) choices.

  • Mbr-xstay 2800, 2.8 m
  • Mbr-xstay 4200, 4.2 m
  • Mbr-xstay 5600, 5.6 m
04

Connectors Double-side only

Used to join pairs of uprights at the top of double-sided racks. 2 types: choose by available floor space.

  • 620 mm: minimises rack width. Riggers may clash unless arms are staggered at different heights on each side.
  • 1,180 mm: arms can sit at the same height both sides without rigger clash. Recommended where there is sufficient space.
05

Arms

Five arm types, basic for standard hulls, heavy-duty with reinforcing for larger boats or lots of cycles. The 50 × 50 mm square pipe is consistent across all.

Basic 700

700 mm long square pipe (50 × 50 mm) welded to a steel back plate. Extruded rubber top protects your boats.

Basic 800

800 mm long, same construction as Basic 700 but with extra reach. Useful for 8s and other wide boats. Extruded rubber top included.

Heavy Duty 800

800 mm long with a longer steel back plate and a steel pipe gusset from the bottom of the base plate to the middle of the arm, adds reinforcing.

Heavy Duty 1000

1000 mm long with the same long back plate and gusset reinforcing.

Heads-up on heavy-duty arms: use as-is (extruded rubber top is ordered separately, not included in price), or upgrade with 600 mm heavy-duty sliding rails + outer part with rubber on the top surface.

How many parts do you need?

Quick reference for arm count, span, cross stays and uprights, by boat size and rack type. The "3-arm" column applies when you choose 3 arms per boat (more support, more parts).

Wheels For Double-Sided Racks

Double-sided racks can be fitted with wheels, 200 mm in diameter, available in 2 types. Combine free + fixed wheels to control how the rack moves on the floor.

01

"Free" Wheel Mbr-wheel1

Moves in any direction and has a brake. 200 mm diameter, heavy-duty.

02

"Fixed" Wheel Mbr-wheel2

Moves in one direction only. 200 mm diameter, heavy-duty, gives the rack a predictable rolling line.

Skipping wheels? The bases need to be lifted slightly off the ground to clear bolt heads. Use small blocks of wood (not provided) or attach our purpose-made feet.
04 · Vertical Oar Rack

Store vertically.
Fit many oars in a small space.

Swift vertical oar racks are for storing both sweep and scull oars vertically, by hanging them on arms from each oar's collar / button. You can store both scull and sweep oars on the same rack.

Each arm is 60 mm wide: enough distance between each row of oars, provided the oars are stored with the spoons "edge on" (only the edge of the oar visible when standing in front of the rack). Storing oars this way allows many oars to be stored in a small space.

Before you order
Make sure there is enough height in your boathouse to store the oars vertically. Contact us for the Assembly Instruction file before ordering.

Single Sided or Double Sided?

Single sided

Suitable for positioning against a wall or in a corner. Front-to-back depth approximately 75 cm.

Double sided

Rowers must be able to access both sides of the rack. Front-to-back depth approximately 145 cm.

1.4 m or 2 m Cross Stays?

We make 2 lengths of cross stays. Make sure you have enough room for the rack, total width matches the cross-stay length.

Cross Stay Total Rack Width Single-side Depth Double-side Depth
1.4 m cross stays1.4 m~75 cm~145 cm
2 m cross stays2 m~75 cm~145 cm

How Many Oars Fit?

Each arm is long enough to hold 8 scull or 8 sweep oars. The capacity below depends on cross-stay length, oar mix, and (for the 2 m rack) the recommended spacing per oar type.

1.4 m rack Max 10 arms · 9 spaces
Sweep only72 sweep oars
Scull only72 scull oars
MixedAny combination up to 72 oars
  • Capacities are based on CII oars with sleeves and collars introduced around 2006. We recommend ~63 mm space between arms for scull oars and ~75 mm for sweep.
  • For older oars or different makes, sleeve and collar sizes may be smaller. It might be possible to fit 1 extra arm, holding more oars.

Common Questions

Can these racks be fitted with wheels?
No, vertical oar racks cannot be fitted with wheels.
What stops the oars getting scratched?
The arms are already fitted with our purpose-made rubber capping: protects the collars / buttons and sleeves from scratching.
Is there a choice in arm height?
The main cross stay (to which all arms attach) connects to the uprights at any of 8 heights. If sweep oars will be stored, one of the higher positions must be used.
What are the shims for?
We make 2 mm thick steel shims to level the rack on uneven floors. Only useful if the rack is not on wheels: vertical racks always qualify. You can also make your own after install.
More than one rack?
Connect racks together and save on parts: 1 rack needs 2 "A frames", but 2 racks need just 3 "A frames".
Why bolt-together?
Cheap shipping (no bulky parts). Order only what you need. Add parts later with a phone call. Reconfigure any time.
How is the finishing?
Each part is hot galvanised for rust protection. China-galvanised pieces aren't pretty but are very strong. Some distributors re-galvanise locally for a better look, ask your distributor.
Tools & people for assembly?
Assemble with 2 people. Moving the assembled rack into position, the more hands the better. Tools: at least 1 × 13 mm and 1 × 14 mm spanner.

How the Parts Fit Together

Single-sided assembly

Each end has an "A frame": an upright + diagonal bolted at the top, with a connector at the bottom. The two A frames join via 3 cross stays: 2 near floor level, plus the main cross stay at the top, which the arms attach to (sandwiched between the foot of the arm and a back plate).

Double-sided assembly

Each end has an "A frame" with an upright + 2 diagonals, bolted at the top, with 2 connectors at the bottom. The two A frames join via 4 cross stays: 3 near floor level, plus the main cross stay at the top. Arms are sandwiched between the feet of 2 arms (one on each side).

05 · Horizontal Oar Rack

Store flat.
Plus boats without riggers.

Swift horizontal oar racks are for storing both sweep and scull oars horizontally, by laying them on 2 arms. With these racks, you can store both scull and sweep oars on the same rack.

These racks are also good for storing boats without riggers in a very compact way, especially on the double-sided version.

Single Sided or Double Sided?

Single sided

Suitable for positioning against a wall or in a corner. Front-to-back depth: 1 m.

Double sided

Rowers must be able to access both sides. Front-to-back depth: 1.8 m. Doubles as compact boat storage with the right cross stays.

1.4 m or 2 m Cross Stays?

We make 2 lengths of cross stays. The total length of the rack matches the cross-stay choice (with a small overhang).

Cross Stay Total Rack Length Single-side Depth Double-side Depth
1.4 m cross stays1.5 m1 m1.8 m
2 m cross stays2.1 m1 m1.8 m

How Many Oars Fit?

Each arm holds 8 scull or 8 sweep oars. Total capacity depends on vertical spacing between arms and how tightly you want to pack them.

Side-view: oars laid across pairs of arms; spacing between arms determines how many "rows" you can fit.

For CII big-blade / smoothie scull and sweep oars, vertical spacing can go as low as 200 mm (also the design minimum).

Wheels & Anti-Scratch

Wheels, 200 mm, 2 types

Horizontal racks can be fitted with wheels: 200 mm diameter. Choose "Free" (any direction + brake) or "Fixed" (one direction only). Without wheels, lift bases off bolt heads with wood blocks or our purpose-made feet.

Anti-scratch capping

Arms ship as bare steel. We recommend our purpose-made rubber capping to protect oars, or use your own (e.g. strips of carpet). Something is needed to protect the oars from scratching.

Using This Rack to Store Boats

The double-sided version is great for storing boats without riggers in a compact way. With double-sided arms you have 850 mm of horizontal space: comfortably stores even the widest boats, including gig 4s.

Doubling up with wood
For lots of smaller boats (1s & 2s), double the storage by attaching 50 × 50 mm wood to the tops of the arms (with strong tape etc.). 2.4 m long wood is plenty for 2 racing doubles per side.
Heavy boats, load carefully
4s and 8s can be stored 4 per arm, but total weight gets very high. Do not use wheels, and load the rack in a balanced way.

Boat Storage Capacity (no length-of-wood extension)

2.5 m1s & 2s350 mm6 pairs12 boats24 boats
2.5 m4s & 8s400–500 mm5 pairs10 boats20 boats

It's possible to mix different boat types on the same rack. For storing boats (rather than oars) you'll need longer cross stays: use 3 of the cross stays sold as parts for the Movable Boat Rack (MBR). Because the HOR & MBR designs differ, prepare 1 spacer (50 × 50 × 200 mm with 2 × 9 mm bolt holes), square steel pipe or solid wood works.

Common Questions

How do all the parts fit together?
One upright bolts to one base. Each rack uses 2 uprights + 2 bases, joined by 3 cross stays (2 near floor level, 1 toward the top). Wheels (if used) attach to bases. Arms bolt to the uprights as required.
What are the shims for?
2 mm thick steel shims level the rack on uneven floors. Only useful when the rack isn't on wheels. You may prefer to make your own after install.
Why bolt-together?
Cheap shipping (no bulky parts). Order only what you need. Add parts later with a phone call. Reconfigure any time.
How is the finishing?
Hot galvanised for rust protection. China-galvanised parts aren't pretty but very strong. Some distributors re-galvanise locally for a better look, ask your distributor.
06 · Coastal Trolley

Heavy duty.
Built for any coastal hull.

Swift Racing's range of trolleys are all designed to accommodate any Coastal Rowing boat, are heavy-duty, and are modular for ease of transport and shipping.

07 · Regatta Racks

Container-friendly.
Pack down for travel.

All regatta racks are double-sided and designed to make use of the 4 × 4 cm steel pipe used for loading containers, to avoid waste.

They can be used as permanent racking in boathouses, but are low cost and ideal for use as temporary racking at regattas. Detaching the cross stays allows them to be stored in a small space or transported on boat trailers.
