Who we are at Swift Racing Canada
Samuel has played many sports at a high level for most of his life and has always been passionate about getting outside and moving. He fell in love with coastal and open-water rowing at the first-ever North American Coastal event over ten years ago and hasn’t stopped searching for rowing opportunities since. He has rowed at many clubs across the country, including: Gorge Narrows, St. Catharines, Kingston, Ridley, Hanlan, Montreal, Laval, Alma, Terrebonne, and Brock University. He also spent a year coaching Division One Rowing at the University of Oklahoma. Two of his favourite accomplishments are a sixteenth place finish in Canada racing the open men’s single, and top Canadian single at the World Coastal Rowing Championships in British Columbia, placing seventeenth worldwide. Sam is eager to grow the sport of rowing and has partnered up with John Armitage to continue developing the rowing community.
John has spent a lifetime of striving for excellence as a high performance coach and athlete in the sport of rowing. In 2016 John retired as the Head Coach of the Queen’s rowing team after 40 years at the helm. He continues as the Head Coach for the Kingston Rowing Club. John is a certified NCCP Level 4 rowing coach. He has been inducted into the Kingston Business Hall of Fame, Kingston District Sports Hall of Fame, Kingston Rowing Hall of Fame, and Brockville Collegiate Hall of Fame. He is also a recipient of the Rowing Canada, Canadian University and OUA Coach of the Year and CSSRA Lifetime Achievement awards. John is currently playing a central role in the introduction of coastal rowing while becoming certified as a World Coastal Rowing coach. John and Sam Lavoie founded Swift Racing Canada to distribute off-shore/coastal and flat water boats to Canada, as well as to promote the emerging sport of coastal rowing.
